Internet Safety

I decided to read "it's 'Only' Violence" by Brad J. Bushman because I read that Brooke read it and liked it. I also watched some of the videos on the netsmartz website, the fauxpaws video, and frontline PBS. From watching these videos I learned that there are many great things that we can get from the internet...we just need to be careful about how much time and energy we put into technology. There is nothing better than real life conversation and if children and adults get to involved in virtual communication and neglect person to person conversation we can really harm ourselves.

I asked my neice what she new about internet safety and I was actually really surprised at how much she knew. (she must have just had internet safety at school or something) She knew not to give any personal information out over the internet and that we shouldn't talk to strangers. She also said we shouldn't spend to much time on the computer either. I was really surprised at how informed she was about internet safety. I shared a couple things that I learned to her and I think that she will spend less time on the computer and more time with her friends:)

I found it very interesting all of the different strategies to teaching children while not causing self esteem problems. I totally give unsolicited help to students because I want them to succeed but I now see that I am only causing more problems. Allow students to come to grasp with the idea that failure is okay we just have to find an alternate strategy for success.

IP&T Motivation

1. I would say that the students in my cohort class were more intrinsically motivated when it came to academics. The teacher never really had to do a ton of motivation to get the students to want to learn. However, I do believe that my mentor teacher used an extrinsic motivation system to teach her students develop their behaviors into intrinsic motivation. Most of the rewards systems in my second grade class were behavior oriented.
2. By using appropriate awards and praise we can allow our students to move more towards intrinsic motivation by allowing them to see why it is important for them to behave well or why it is important for them to do well in school. Once the students can seen the importance they may become intrinsically motivated. However, if we do not use praise and rewards sparingly and if we use them inappropriately we can cause our students to move from intrinsic motivation to extrinsic because they feel they are being rewarded for completing something and not the reward of just being a good reader.
3. Because if students feel as if they are capable at succeeding they believe they can do it and don’t get frustrated however if it is something that is too difficult they often give up because it is something they believe they can not master. If students also know the important or the relevance of learning and certain skill than they can move to an intrinsic motivation because they want to succeed because they see the importance of understanding.
4. I saw a lot of positive reinforcement in my classroom that I felt was a student-level strategy for increasing motivation. Instead of just giving useless comments like “good job” my mentor teach would point out aspects in their work that were done well. This allows they students to see that she is good at something or that she has done something correctly so they know how to do it the next time around. As a classroom level we used table reward system, which allowed students to work cooperatively together to try to receive rewards as a table. It was amazing how that positive peer pressure worked.
5. I believed with the self-worth theory because I believe that if students have the self confidents that they can do something they are more likely to succeeed than in any other circumstances.

Children with Technology

I learned so many different ways that I could use technologies in my classroom. It also gave me a better understanding of how to affectivly use technologies in classrooms. I noticed that because the students are interested in the technology that it allows them to focus and get involved with the lesson that is being taught.

Another thing that I noticed from these three videos is that it is very realistic to use technology at a very young age. In the '"Brown Bear Brown Bear" she was using technology at the at of 4 and 5 which is so amazing to me. I also loved that technology allowed the students studying spiders to communicate and work with students in a completely different state. I think that would be really fun for the kids. These clips gave me reassurance that I know enough about technology to use it into my classroom if I really want to.

Technology

My initial feelings and thoughts when walking into my classroom was that they did not have access to hardly any technologies. As I have researched and looked for more technology support I have found that although they do not have much permanent technologies they do have access. Most equipment needs to be checked out from the library in advance. Each classroom has an overhead and two computers with some software but mostly internet sites.
